Another line, initiated in 1985, involving the study of ameboflagellates in asthma patients, shows the presence of certain forms of protozoa, which may serve as an aid in the clinical diagnosis of asthma and may also point to new therapeutic alternatives. The finding, recently, of protozoal forms in extracts of the stomach of dust mites that were very similar in morphology to those observed in the sputa of asthmatic patients and to the nasal discharge of patients with allergic rhinitis, adds a significant new dimension to this research, as it may constitute a nexus relating the presence of these micro-organisms with respiratory allergy.

In the light of the experience obtained, it is time for a qualitative leap forward in our research. Essential to all research are knowledge, ideas, persistence and enthusiasm, and our team is committed, now and for the future, to implementing these prerequisites. And yet this commitment, while fundamental, is not sufficient to carry out research in optimum conditions. New technical means and infrastructure are now needed, and, more than anything else, the specific involvement of society, and especially of Asturias. All this will help achieve the purely scientific goals we have set, and will also favour the involvement of other specialities to broaden the field of action in combating the illnesses we are investigating. |
The concept that motivates us is the personal and collective conviction that success in experimental clinical studies is not always the preserve of large research groups with massive infrastructure. History offers many examples of how the individual alternative or the action of small multidisciplinary teams has been able to decipher great enigmas.
It is for this reason that we have set up the INCLINICA Foundation for Clinical, Pneumological and Carcinogenic Research , a non-profit making, Asturian institution devoted to medical, scientific, practical and multidisciplinary research, that will be a meeting point for the efforts of medical professionals and the will to help and collaborate of the society which supports it and which it is dedicated to serve.
